Kibra MP Ken Okoth breathed his last on Friday after a brave battle with colorectal cancer for years.
He was a man admired by many moreso his constituents who eulogised him for his dedication in serving them despite his illness.
However, there are things about the late MP unknown to many:
1. He was raised by a single mother
Kenneth Odhiambo Okoth was born in 1978 in Kisumu Ndogo, Kibera where his mum, Angelina sold tomatoes to put food on the table.
His mum struggled to bring him up together with his five other siblings after their after his father abandoned them.
2. He is an alumni of Starehe Boys'
After completing his primary school education at Olympics Primary School, Okoth scored 613 marks out of 700 which earned him a four-year full scholarship to join Starehe Boys' Centre where he sat for his KCSE.
3. He worked as newspaper vendor
After completing his high school education Okoth worked as a newspaper vendor for 'The East African'. His work was to deliver the newspapers to offices along Ngong Road and the suburbs of Karen.
4. He worked as a watchman while studying
Due to his love for German, in 1996, Okoth enrolled in Goeth Institute - the institute allowed him to learn German language for free as he worked as a night guard at one their premises in Nairobi.
Okoth acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree in German and European studies at St. Lawrence University in the United States of America after studying from 1997-2001.
From 2002 to 2005 Okoth acquired a masters in German from Georgetown University in Washington DC.
5. He was a lecturer
After completing his studies, Okoth became a lecturer at Georgetown University where he taught African studies from 2005 to 2008.
Okoth will be remembered for his introduction of the Marijuana Control Bill to Parliament in 2018. The bill aimed to decriminalise the use of Marijuana.
