Murang'a Governor Mwangi wa Iria has asked the government to change its strategy and focus on real issues that ordinary people are battling with.
Kenya is currently battling a possible economic downturn with Treasury now slashing budgets of various departments to fund key projects.
Speaking in Kandara on Wednesday, Iria asked DP Ruto to focus on agriculture instead of roads and electricity which he said that no longer matters.
According to the second term governor, the government was out of touch with issues affecting people. He insisted that many people cannot afford basic services.
"This country has a problem, even if we build many roads and storey buildings, money is all that matters. We are all farmers and people want something on the table," he said.
"These people may need roads but if Agriculture continues to struggle, then we need doing nothing. DP please, these are the things people need. We may clap for you but when we go back, we are always in tears," added Wa Iria.
The DP has been initiating major projects that focus on infrastructure which Mwangi opposed, arguing that farmers should be empowered first.
It was the first time DP William Ruto was returning to Mt Kenya after weeks of postponing gatherings in the region to avoid clashing with President Uhuru Kenyatta's functions.
Last week, Uhuru held a meeting with Mt Kenya leaders where he asked them to first wait for the outcome of the Building Bridges Initiative report before criticising it.
Ruto has been making inroads in Central Kenya, a move that has often worried his critics, who accuse him of being unfit to lead.
