The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has embarked on the mission to establish why seven counties didn’t remit Sh13 billion in terms of tax.
The governors on the radar of the taxman risk arrest if they will not give valid reasons for the same.
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is expected to present himself today to the taxman’s headquarters to defend himself for allegedly failing to remit tax amounting to Sh4.5 billion in taxes.
The KRA management revealed that Sonko and six other governors are on spot over tax evasion.
The governors are now wanted by the KRA to explain why the said amount was not remitted by the governments.
The other governors who are set to be grilled are Okoth Obado (Migori), Cyprian Awiti (Homa Bay), Josphat Nanok (Turkana), Amason Kingi (Kilifi), Mwangi Wa Iria(Murang’a) and Ferdinard Waititu of KiambuAccording to KRA, Waititu owes Sh3,216,613,189, Nanok’s (Sh455,634,523), Kingi Sh2,059,410,078 while Obado’s is yet to settle Sh1,300,000,000 tax demand.
