Kikuyu legendary musician Joseph Kamaru was laid to rest today (Thursday) at Muthithi in Murang'a County.

Kamaru passed away on Wednesday last week while receiving treatment at the MP Shah Hospital in Nairobi. 

The benga musician who died at the age of 79 is said to have developed breathing problems. 

Kamaru who hails from Kangema in Murang'a was born in 1939 and started his music career in 1956. 

The music icon's funeral was attended by high profile politicians including President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, as well as several governors, MPs and MCAs. 

Speaking during the funeral ceremony, President Kenyatta pledged to host all Kikuyu artists at State House, Nairobi on Tuesday next week. The Head of State said the move is aimed at ensuring the Kikuyu music industry continues to thrive.

Kenyans across the country have continued to send their messages of condolences to the family of the legendary musician.

Responding to a post on the United States of Kiambu Facebook group by former Kiambu MP aspirant Njenga Wamabati, Kiambu residents joined Kenyans in paying their last respect to Kamaru.
