Many youths in Kenya are facing unemployment but Cheryl Wanjiku has beaten all this odd to secure a high paying job. Barely nineteen, she earns Sh60,000.
Born in a family of three, she grew a passion for modelling which saw her secure a job as a brand model in one of the best photography firms in Nairobi.
“I had a passion for modelling since I was a kid and my mother mentored me a lot. I underwent a series of competitions to ensure my skill was good. When I joined high school in 2013, I decided to take modelling training seriously,” she said.
With her courage and hard work, she became aggressive in modelling which saw her secure a job as the communications director in Education Program International Limited in 2018.
“I remember I went for this interview and I had no degree as other candidates but I had hope that I will get the job. I faced the panel with courage and with my sharp mind, which I acquired through the modelling experience and I impressed the panel,” she said.
However, she admitted facing several challenged in her journey as she was too young and had to face stiff competition.
“With my age, several people addressed me as a kid and discouraged me but I did not listen. I had a passion to make my dreams come true,” she said. She advised the youth to knock at every opportunity that comes along and that they should not have to have connections to get a job.
“You might not start the same way as I did but your hard work will get you to where you want,” she concluded.
