Deputy President William Ruto is now supporting calls for a referendum to change the 2010 constitution.
Speaking during a fundraiser in Tharaka Nithi county on Saturday, the DP who has always maintained that there was no need for constitutional reforms declared that he would support a referendum whose aim is to change the lives of the citizens.
Ruto also made it clear that he would not engage himself in referendum campaigns but challenged NASA leader Raila Odinga to accept the outcome if voting will be done.
"We are not scared of a referendum and we are waiting for those crusading for it to explain to Kenyans on the changes they want,” said DP Ruto.
The change of tune by the DP which has elicited sharp reactions countrywide means that the push for the referendum will not face any serious opposition.
Ruto made this decision simply to silence his political critics.
NASA leaders were already using the referendum debate to attack him as witnessed during their campaigns in Migori county.
Raila Odinga who is a political enemy to William Ruto had already declared a battle with the DP against the referendum but this will automatically change everything.
Baringo Senator Gideon Moi who is Ruto’s political rival had already joined the call for the constitutional reforms and their victory would have affected DP Ruto’s political ambitions ahead of 2022.
To end all these, Ruto might have decided to join them.
