Garissa Township MP Aden Duale has exuded confidence that Parliament will approve President Uhuru Kenyatta’s proposal on Value Added Tax (VAT) when they convene on Thursday.
Duale observes that though there are some concerned voices on the proposed fuel VAT, the legislators should not let the president down.
In an interview with journalists at Parliament Buildings on Wednesday, Duale asked the MPs to put the interests of the country's economy first and approve the proposals.
He said that while Kenyans have raised concerns over the VAT, the government has no other means of getting funding.
“We must be fair and say the truth because the government operates on taxpayers money to fund its projects,” he said.
Duale hit out at some MPs who he said are using the VAT to campaign for popularity.
On Tuesday, Jubilee MPs met with President Uhuru Kenyatta who urged them to approve the proposals.
Similarly, a section of ODM MPs met with their party leader Raila Odinga who equally asked them to support the proposal.
The MPs will meet tomorrow to debate and vote on the 8% VAT.
The lawmakers will also debate on the proposed budgetary cuts.
A section of MPs allied to Uhuru and Raila have vowed to reject the VAT proposal.
The MPs want a zero-rated tax on fuel and petroleum products.
