Deputy President William Ruto has made an about turn on his opposition for a referendum push to change the constitution.
Speaking on Saturday in Tharaka Nithi, the DP said he cannot oppose a move that will benefit Kenyans.
He, however, said he is only opposed to hypocrisy in the push for a popular vote to amend the law.
“We have no problem with the referendum. Our problem is hypocrisy and conman-ship, to tell us the referendum was agreed during the handshake, you are lying to us,” he said.
Ruto’s remarks are a contradiction of his earlier position where he opposed the calls as pushed by ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Ruto’s announcement came a day after a section of his allies warned he risks isolating himself if he decided to oppose a referendum.
Led by Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny and Kipkelion West MP Hilary Koskei, the allies cautioned the DP to be ‘smart’.
“Mr Ruto has to be careful in the way he handles this issue of referendum as it can isolate him from the rest of the people in government and scuttle his efforts to unite the country and solidify his political base ahead of the 2022 elections,” Kutuny said.
