The Ministry of Education has embarked on a crackdown on schools yet to comply with safety regulations.

The government has now ordered for the closure of 21 schools in Kisumu after they failed to meet the required infrastructure standards as stated in the Education Act. 

The County Director of Education Isaac Atebe on Friday said that the government has already ordered for the closure of a school in Nyando-Sub County over safety concerns. 

The government has also said that it will close down the remaining 21 schools after the exercise to determine whether they meet the safety standards kicked off 

“In Ahero, Nyando, there is one private school which had a bad infrastructure and we declared it closed immediately,” he said, as quoted by Capital FM.

The County Director of also said that all the affected schools have been operating without a license, adding that the government will not back down in the war against the schools for disobeying safety guidelines.

“The notice of the closure is to enable the students and pupils affected to be able to be placed in the nearby public schools as per the choice of the parents,” he said. 

The closure of the schools come eight students died following the collapse of Precious Talents School in Nairobi. Education CS George Magoha has affirmed that no school will remain open if it does not comply with the safety standards.
