Emerging details indicate that John Mutinda, the man whose vehicle plunged into the Indian Ocean on Saturday, had repeatedly threatened to kill himself before his ultimate death.
The Nation reports that prior to his death, the man who was reportedly suffering in the hands of his wife had threatened that he would take his life to escape his troubles.
The paper has also confirmed from the police and family members that the deceased was repeatedly assaulted by his wife Ruth Mueni, at some point being scalded with hot water.
A senior police officer at Mombasa Central Police Station confirmed that the deceased was a man under siege, saying that he handled one of their domestic assault cases.
On Saturday, his wife claimed that Mutinda left their house early in the morning, claiming that he had a dream where his late father phoned him, demanding for a meeting in the CBD.
Though she admits that they had marital issues, she remains tight-lipped on claims of harassing her husband. On the other hand, the family of the deceased has blamed her for his death on alleged harassment from the wife.
Details also indicate that the man was detained at the Mombasa Central Police Station for four days after being reported by the wife, allegations the Mombasa-based rights group wants to be investigated.
"Haki Africa condemns such acts of unlawful detention and urges Ipoa to investigate the purported misconduct at Central Police Station,” said Haki Africa Legal Officer Rosette Ochoo.
The body of the deceased is being preserved St the Jocham Hospital Mortuary pending a pathological test and finally burial in Kitui county.
