Former Kathiani MP Wavinya Ndeti has pleaded with President Uhuru Kenyatta to further reduce the Value Added Tax (VAT) on fuel and petroleum.
Ndeti said the proposed eight percent VAT on fuel is still too harsh and will continue to affect common citizens.
She said while reducing the VAT from 16 to 8 percent is a good sign, it is still too high for common Kenyans.
Ndeti said the high fuel prices have pushed Kenyans to the wall.
“Millions of Kenyans have been affected by the hiked fuel prices and cannot go to work because of high bus fares or afford normal meals,” Ndeti said.
She addressed the public in Kathiani sub-county on Sunday,
Ndeti said Kenyans have been overburdened with taxes.
“The president should do a good balance on this issues and ensure that Kenyans are not overburdened with taxes,” she said.
The 16 percent VAT on fuel that came to force on September 1 has seen fuel prices hike causing public uproar.
On Friday, President Kenyatta proposed eight percent VAT on fuel.
MPs are expected to convene on Tuesday to discuss the president's proposal.
