President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday led Kenyans in celebrating marathoner Brigid Kosgei for breaking the world women marathon record.
Kosgei broke the record after clocking 2 hours, 14 minutes and 04 seconds during Sunday's Chicago marathon.
She has now erased the record previously set by Britain's Paula Radcliffe which stood at 2:15:25 set on April 13, 2003 in London.
"Hongera Brigid Kosgei for smashing the 16-year old women's marathon record in Chicago. Yet again, a determined young athlete lifts the ever rising profile of our nation's sporting potential. Congratulations Lawrence Cherono for making it a double success for Kenya," Uhuru said.
Deputy President William Ruto also congratulated the young athlete for smashing the world record.
"Hearty congratulations to Brigid Kosgei for setting a new women’s world record of 2:14:04, and triumphantly defending your 2018 #ChicagoMarathon title,"Ruto tweeted.
Veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga said the country is proud of Brigid following her victory.
"Congratulations Brigid Kosgei on breaking the Women's Marathon World Record in Chicago. We are extremely proud of your victory that has made a conqueror on both sides of the Atlantic this weekend. This cements our nation's place as the dominant powerhouse in distance running," Raila said.
The win came a day after renowned marathoner Eliud Kipchoge completed a full marathon in under two hours.
