In a bid to eliminate kitchen pollution and diseases caused by smoke, 70 women from Kalyet women group in Uasin Gishu County on Sunday benefited from a donation of modern jiko locally known as 'chepkube'.

According to Sophie Koech from Soroptomist International Organization, the donation seeks to help women cook from smoke-free area to prevent them from being attacked by diseases such as throat cancer, coughing, Asthma and lung cancer.

Speaking while giving the smokeless chimneys to the 70 women, Koech said most of the beneficiaries are from areas where there is no electricity and piped water. 

“From next week, our experts (fundis) will be moving in the 70 households making the modern Jiko’s and we expect to be completed in a month,” she noted.

Apart from the jikos, the women will also be given solar lanterns and 5,000 litres rainwater harvesting tanks.

Caroline Kiprotich, the chairlady of Kalyet women group said the jikos will help them use less charcoal and also prevent them from suffering from diseases caused by smoke. 

Soroptomist International Organization is a group of women professionals who have come together to help women and girls who are in need.
