Residents of Kiareni in Marani, Kisii County are mourning the death of a 23-year-old man who died after consuming poison.

Locals said the deceased identified as Victor, who works as a laborer in Kisii town returned home on Friday evening only to commit suicide on Saturday evening. 

"Victor came home on Friday and he was spotted at a chang'aa den with friends. On Saturday he had a quarrel with his cousin. He threatened to take his own life after the quarrel which lasted for 10 minutes," said a local Richard Ongeri.

Mr. Ongeri stated that living by his words, Victor went to Marani market where he bought poison and returned home drunk.

"He consumed poison immediately he left a chang'aa den yesterday night. His lifeless body was discovered by his younger brother who went to wake him up today, Sunday morning," he noted.  

Area chief Simon Ondigo confirmed the incident and said police officers from Marani collected the body and took it to Kisii Teaching and referral hospital morgue. 

"Victor separated with his wife three months ago and since then he has been consuming chang'aa to relieve stress. it is not clear why what led him to quarrel with his cousin but, probe has been started," he noted.
