Mr Brian Bera, a fifth year engineering student at JKUAT could not be produced in court with the officer, Joseph Asugo blaming the hospital management.

According to him, the suspect was moved to a different room where police officers could not access in the hospital, a claim that was dismissed by the CEO.

“Your honour, the hospital has locked in the suspect because of the bill he has accrued. The hospital is shifting him from one bed to another in a bid to hide him from us,” said Asugo as quoted by the Standard.

“Your honour, the suspect was guarded by a policeman who on June 15 reported that the suspect was escorted to unknown place by the hospital,” Asugo said.

But Dr Kamuri insisted that the facility does not have any other holding cells other than the wards, adding that the police should produce the student.

”Kenyatta National hospital does not have any other holding facilities apart from the wards as alleged by this policeman. Professionally, this policeman is suffering from delusions of grandeur,” Kamuri said.

When asked by Milimani Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi how the police learnt about the escape, Asugo told the court that a policeman who was guarding Kibet made the report.

“When we learnt of the mysterious escape of Kibet, we launched a serious manhunt in the hospital and outside the hospital to no avail your honour,” Asugo said.

The Magistrate ordered the two to return to court on July 3 this year with the student. He had been arrested for scaling State House wall early this month.
