Thirdway Alliance party Secretary General Fredrick Okang'o was allegedly shot and injured when armed thugs stormed their offices in Nairobi on Thursday night.
According to party leader Ekuru Aukot, six armed men raided their office which is located in Lavington and shot Okang'o but fortunately he managed to escape before they took away his life.
“Our party office Thirdway Kenya in Lavington, Chalbi drive has just been invaded by 6 armed men in Nairobi. They have shot at our SG Fredrick Okang'o who ran and hid inside one of the offices. This comes barely few hours after Punguza Mizigo Bill passed. This a cowardly act," Aukot posted on his official Twitter handle.
The attack, whose motive is yet to be known, and police are yet to confirm, came barely hours after the party got a major boost in its push for a constitutional referendum after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) confirmed the party had met all the requirements for a plebiscite.
The electoral agency confirmed it has verified signatures of over 1.2 million registered voters in support of Punguza Mizigo referendum, noting it will forward the draft bill to all the 47 county assemblies for consideration within the next three months.
“The Commission has since verified that the Initiative has been supported by 1.22.541 registered voters. This is therefore to notify the public and all stakeholders that the initiative has met the requisite threshold as required by the said Article 257 (4) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010,” said IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati on Thursday.
