It emerges that founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, just like his age requires, was a man who loved to do things slowly.

This repeatedly played out during travels, where he made it clear that his motorcade was not to do more than 40 kilometres per hour, no matter the distance.

According to his then Escort Commander Bernard Njinu, breaking this law would earn them a serious scolding, which forced them to come up with a trick to make their travels faster.

He says that they (himself and his colleagues in the service) came up with a plot which included waiting for Kenyatta to doze off and then speeding without his knowledge.

The speed would be returned to the 40km per hour when he stopped snoring, which was repeatedly done in long journeys, mostly between Nakuru and Mombasa.

Another weird thing about Mzee was his admiration for money, and would either demand that his money be given for him to keep or passed through him on its way to the bank.

Such an instance, according to first Africa Police Commissioner Bernard Hinga, was when he leased out his farm in Gatundu for the construction of presidential guard houses.

Hinga told Nation reporter Kamau Ngotho that Kenyatta refused to have the money banked but instead had it given to him in cash, and stuffed it in his wallet bragging.

"Ici ni ciakwa (This is my cash)!”he is reported to have bragged as he oput the wallet away.

In mid 70's, says politician Stanley Githunguri, Kenyatta had him bring him Sh200, 000 payment for a land he (Kenyatta) had sold him along University way.

He then told him that he could now yake it to the bank, after feeling the sweet aroma of the bank notes.

"Now you can go deposit the money in my account,” said the late Kenyatta, according to Githunguri.
