The 2022 succession politics is already playing out with four years left to the much anticipated general election.
Top politicians across the political divide and regions are formulating strategies on how to get votes for top positions in 2022.
The presidential seat is of the interest and has so far attracted several top politicians who are keen to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Among the politicians eyeing to ascend to power in 2022 is Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Others who have declared their 2022 presidential bids include Deputy President William Ruto, Maendeleo Chap Chap leader Alfred Mutua, Baringo Senator Gideon Moi, and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho.
As the presidential succession politics play out, there are certain politicians who are likely to find themselves being picked as presidential running mates in 2022.
According to political analyst Peter Ngure, here are the four Ukambani politicians who could be presidential running mates in 2022:
1. Kivutha Kibwana
He is the Makueni governor serving his last term in office.
Kibwana has been severally voted as the best performing governor in terms of service delivery to the locals.
The Makueni governor is Kalonzo's close ally.
Political pundits argue that Deputy President William Ruto could pick Kibwana as his running mate in 2022.
The governor is said to enjoy cordial relationship with DP Ruto.
Kibwana has not announced his next political journey after his term ends in 2022.
2. Charity Ngilu
She is the Kitui governor serving her first term in office.
The NARC governor is among the vocal and veteran female Kamba politicians.
She is a close ally of Kalonzo Musyoka.
Ngilu was the first Kenyan woman to contest for the presidential election in 1997.
The Kitui governor according to political pundits could be picked as a presidential running mate by some top politicians who have declared interests to succeed Uhuru Kenyatta.
3. Kalonzo Musyoka
He is the Wiper party leader and former Vice President.
Kalonzo has declared an interest in the 2022 presidential election.
However, political analysts argue that the Ukambani political kingpin could be approached by other top aspirants for him to become a presidential running mate.
Kalonzo has, however, maintained that he will not agree to be someone’s running mate in 2022.
4. Alfred Mutua
He is the Machakos governor serving his second term in office.
Governor Mutua has equally declared an interest in the 2022 presidential seat.
Mutua has maintained that he has what it takes to succeed President Kenyatta.
The Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader has been severally quoted stating that he will not be someone’s running mate in 2022 polls.
