As the clock ticks towards the October 8 Migori Senatorial by-election, political heavyweights in the ODM county are about to flex their muscles in a battle of the wits where individual political clout and party popularity will determine the outcome.

Whereas former Cabinet Ministers Ochillo Ayacko and Dalmas Otieno are viewed by many as favorites to clinch the seat, surprises are bound to arise in what could be an election shocker.

After over 5 years in the political cold, former Suna East MP John Pesa has thrown the hat into the ring and will be going for the Migori Senator position.

On paper, he is an outsider in the race. But with a fallout looming if ODM goes ahead to pick the candidate in a boardroom deal, a good number of aspirants will vie as independent candidates to take on the Orange party candidate. And who knows, the voters may decide to protest the party’s direct nomination move by punishing its candidate in the ballot.

It happened in 2013 when Governor Okoth Obado was allegedly shortchanged during the primaries.

He, however, went on to win the seat on little known PDP party after beating Prof. Edward Oyugi of ODM.
