Garissa First Lady Fardosa Osman has reiterated the need to shun retrogressive practices as the only way to curb cases of fistula in women.
Taking to her twitter handle after closing the week-long fistula camp at the Garissa Referral Hospital on Friday, the First Lady disclosed that the disorder can be prevented by delaying the age of first pregnancy, shunning Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and early marriages.
"I wish to reiterate that Obstetric Fistula is preventable. It can be largely be avoided by delaying the age of first pregnancy, the cessation of harmful traditional practices such as FGM, early marriages and timely access to obstetric care," tweeted Osman.
From Monday this week, the county hospital in conjunction with Amref and Global One Initiative has been conducting free reconstructive while offering to counsel to the affected mothers and young women from the region.
Cases of women suffering from fistula in Garissa have been on the rise, a thing that has been blamed on outdated cultural practices like FGM and early marriages.
Fistula as a disease has been cited as a major cause of depression among women as those affected feel isolated from society due to the unregulated removal of wastes from the body.
