If you grew in up in Kikuyu land, you must have come across various types of foods prepared by our parents and grandparents.

Besides the famous "mukimo", Kikuyus have some other dishes which may not be very common but are somewhat hilarious.

Here are four such foods and how they are prepared:

"Ngunja matu"

This is probably the most hilarious type of food in Kenyan history. It literally means "that folds the ears". I have no idea why it had to be given this name but it was one of my worst foods. This meal is a combination of maize flour and potatoes mashed together like ugali.

First, potatoes are fried, then enough water and salt are added. When the potatoes are well cooked and soft enough for easier mashing, maize flour is added and mashing begins. Just like ugali, the meal is stirred vigorously until it's ready. As dry as it is, this dish is served with nothing.

"Mukurugucu"

A hilarious name, right? This is a simple meal mostly cherished by the older generation for reasons I do not know.

It's just another version of "mukimo" only that it lacks potatoes. It contains corn, beans, and pumpkin leaves.

All you have to do is boil your githeri, top it up with the pumpkin leaves, add water and salt and let it simmer for some time. Once the green vegetables are well cooked, you stir it and voila, it's ready to serve!

Rice+githeri

This might sound like a strange combination but believe you me, it's still one of my best dishes today. In most cases, this dish was made when there was no other alternative.

Maybe, the remaining githeri was too little to feed the whole family and the only choice was to cook it with rice in case there were no potatoes.

You fry the githeri first, add water and let it boil for some time. Then add rice until it's cooked.

"Muthura"

This is a very rare meal and you might not have heard of it unless your grandmother is in her 90s.

I only had it once when I visited my grandmother and I still remember how tasty it was. This is also another version of mukimo, prepared exactly like mukimo only that millet is used in place of corn.
