Immediate former chairman of Equity Bank Group, businessman and entrepreneur Dr Peter Amunga on Friday won the election for the Moi University chancellor post.
The election was held at the university's main campus in Kesses.
Dr Amunga came first after trouncing five other contestants a tight battle.
He garnered 225 votes followed closely by former Kenya Forest Services (KFS) director Dr Julius Kipngetich who came in second.
Dr Edward Arege was third while the fourth position was taken by the current University of Nairobi Prof. Michieka Ratemo.
The current chancellor Prof. Miriam Were took the last position. Prof. Were been on the helm of the Kesses-based university for the last five years since her appointment by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2013.
As stipulated in the constitution, the first three names of the contenders will be forwarded to the president by the University Council for the appointment of one of them.
The current Chancellor, Prof. Were is expected to be in office until a new chancellor is appointed by the president after which she will hand over.
