Residents of Chibilat accused Raila of betrayal with some labelling him a 'political conman'.

"What he fought for all these years in now nothing. He has joined the system and we can now establish he was using us," said Peter Nyangena.

Another resident, Joel Nyamboki added: "Raila is a conman. He misused us but his time to lose is coming."

At a funeral in Vihiga, Raila insisted that he had to change his style of approach to issues for the benefit of people.

For economy to grow, he added, Kenyans ought to pay taxes.

"I have not betrayed you. I only changed tact. We cannot use same way in handling things. This is the time."
