The Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji has dismissed claims that there are plans to re-arrest CEO of Keroche Breweries Tabitha Karanja and her husband, Joseph Karanja, over suspected tax evasion allegations.
Haji, who has maintained his committment to end graft, said that the claims of a plot to re-arrest the businesspersons are not only baseless but also ill-driven.
Through their lawyer, lawyer Irungu Kang’ata, the businesspersons alleged that they were aware of a scheme to have then re-arrested for not paying taxes amounting to Sh.14 billion.
The lawyer told stice James Wakiaga that they were informed that they could soon be behind bars once again.
In a Wednesday tweet, DPP said the investigations are still being conducted until further notice before they determine whether they will re-arrest the tycoons or not.
“You honour, we want to proceed with this [anticipatory bail] application since the DPP has continued to threaten my clients with arrests,” Kang’ata told Justice Wakiaga, as quoted by K24.
Karanja has been faulting her competitors for her woes. She has been questioning the manner in which she was arrested and presented in court alongside her husband.
Karanja has appealed to the court to revisit the charges leveled against her firm.
