The rivalry between Deputy President William Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i took center stage for the better part of the weekend in Kisii and Nyamira Counties.
On Friday, Dr Matiang'i traversed the region, starting with launching of Matutu Police Station, Kisii Immigration department, Kenyenya Police Station before winding up at Riokindo High School.
Throughout the trip, the CS was buoyed by the presence of local leaders led by Governors John Nyagarama and James Ongwae with four other ministers accompanying him.
Devolution minister Eugene Wamalwa said that Matiang'i's elevation to head all ministries had not been received in good faith by a section of politicians.
"There are some people who are not happy with him. Do not let him to fight alone. In the cabinet, we are all together as a team and we trust him," he said.
But the Tanga Tanga team under the leadership of Gusii Parliamentary Group Chairman Joash Nyamoko and Kisii DG Joash Maangi, organised quick meetings to counter the CS.
On Saturday, the team pitched tent at Manga in Kitutu Masaba before moving to North Mugirango on Sunday with Matiang'i's trip being the subject of discussion.
Others in the team included Vincent Kemosi of West Mugirango, Shadrack Mose of Kitutu Masaba, Alfa Miruka of Bomachoge-Chache and Ezekiel Mochogu of Nyaribari Masaba.
Mr Sylvanus Osoro of South Mugirango dismissed claims that Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i was at pole position to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.
"He has never been on ballot. Let him concentrate on serving the government. DP William Ruto is the next president and as a community, let's support him," he said.
The two team have been pitching tent in Gusii region for the last several months, both claiming that their preferred candidates will succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.
