Former presidential aspirant the late George Anyona Moseti was detained by retired President Daniel Moi in 1982 over claims of his plans to overthrow the then government.
Anyona was detained after he started another party together with Jaramogi Oginga Odinga who was the first Vice President. He was detained without trial and even his wife’s efforts to have him produced and charged in court hit a dead end.
This was hardly five years since Moi settled on the throne.
Realizing the torrid political moments he could face in future, his government made amendments to the Constitution, which allowed Kenya to be led only by a one party. All the same, the two were released later in 1984.
After release, Anyona distanced himself from active politics until 1990. This was after things were turning upside down and people were fighting for a multiparty government.
He went back to politics since a multiparty government was what he had been fighting for. However, he started his own party and did not join hands with Jaramogi’s party as people anticipated.
Anyona was again arrested in the same year returned to politics in 1990. He was arrested in one of the entertainment houses in Nairobi together with Edward Oyugi, Isaac Ngotho, and Augustus Gathanga over incitement allegations, but this time charged.
As per the claims tabled in court, Anyona had organized a group with a target of overthrowing the government. They were therefore sentenced to seven years in jail. As per the secrets that were revealed by someone in Moi's inner circle, the then assistant minister John Keen, it was a conspiracy to lock Anyona from active politics.
After appealing, he was released in the year 1992 after bailing himself out.
Anyona vied for the Kitutu Masaba parliamentary seat through his party, Kenya Socialist Congress, and won.
He died in 2003 and is remembered as being a Kisii leader who once challenged KANU.
