Kiambu Deputy Governor James Nyoro has survived an impeachment threat after Jubilee Party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju intervened.

A motion to sack Nyoro was expected to be tabled by Witeithie MCA Julius Macharia Taki on Tuesday but the plan was halted.

Taki had wanted the Deputy Governor (DG) impeached over alleged abuse of office and physical and mental incapacity to perform the functions of the office of Deputy Governor.

Still on Tuesday, Ndenderu MCA Solomon Kinuthia was also expected to table an impeachment motion against Governor Ferdinand Waititu on allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

However, before the motions were tabled, Tuju summoned the two groups to the Jubilee Party headquarters in Pangani, Nairobi, and prevailed upon them to drop the plans.

The Sec-Gen asked the MCAs to look for alternatives in solving their disputes with the Executive, instead of going through the impeachment route.

Tuju said the motions would portray President Uhuru Kenyatta in a bad light at a time he has been advocating for peace and reconciliation in the country.

Following the meeting, Taki wrote formally to the Speaker Stephen Ndichu informing him that he has withdrawn the motion against the DG with immediate effect.

“Following a consultative meeting of Members of the County Assembly from the Jubilee Party held yesterday, Monday, December 9, 2019, at Jubilee Party headquarters, the Jubilee Party requested the Members of the County Assembly to seek reconciliation as a way of resolving the issue of pending removal of the governor and the deputy governor,” reads parts of the letter dated December 10, 2019.

“Further, the party reached out to the sponsors of the two motions and urged them to withdraw the same. In view of the above and pursuant to provisions of Standing Order 71(2), I wish to withdraw the motion of notice on the removal of the deputy governor. The purpose of this letter is, therefore, to notify you of the above decision for your action,” the letter adds.

However, Kinuthia, the mover of the motion against Waititu, did not write formally to the Speaker to withdraw his motion of notice on the removal of the Governor. 

MCAs backing the Ndenderu Ward Rep motion have vowed to impeach Waititu on Wednesday next week.
