Former President Daniel Moi is reported to have been a distinctive leader especially when it came to making appointments during his era as the Head of State.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka is a testimony to this interesting characteristic of the retired president as he narrated in his autobiography 'Against All Odds' how a simple phone call from Moi ended up in a job offer.
According to an article published by Kenyans.co.ke, the call came three minutes before Kalanzo was appointed a cabinet minister in 1998.
"Stephen I would have given you something better, but you Kambas have let me down because you did not vote as in 1992. I have, however, allocated you the education docket but with something else on top," Moi stated.
Kalonzo was named as the Minister for Education and Manpower Development; a position which he was not impressed with. He had expected to be given a better docket.
"In my mind, I thought Moi had wanted to appoint me the vice president but must have been prevailed upon by my political adversaries to use the Kamba voting pattern as an excuse," Kalonzo noted.
This was Kalonzo's second appointment after he served as minister for Foreign Affairs and International Relations from 1993 to 1998.
Kalonzo Musyoka is currently the leader of Wiper Party.
