According to the NTV journalist who was speaking in a short Instagram video, she was pushed to start the conversation around the subjects after she realised that a good number of men were uncomfortable expressing their views on rape, especially in public.

Earlier on, former Kiss 100 radio presenter Adelle Onyango had shared a post on rape and Janet Mbugua came out to support her.

Janet Mbugua noted that shortly after that, men sent her private messages on Instagram commending her for using her position to fight rape. What she could however not understand was why men were afraid to share their opinion in public and instead send her private messages.

She went on to share the post on the role of men in gender equality on Wednesday with the hope of making men talk freely about the subject and draw them closer to women.

"Can we talk about the role men can play in gender equality because they can be passionate advocates because of the experiences of the women around them. But we often find that they retreat into their "man caves". Is that they don't know how to articulate their support or how to participate? Men, how can we make you our allies? Ladies, what do you want men to do more of?" Janet Mbugua wrote on Instagram.
