The Garissa County football team has received goodies from Governor Ali Bunow Korane.
The county boss awarded the team 500, 000 shillings which he said would go a long way in helping the players in their preparations in the upcoming county tournaments.
Korane revealed that he had awarded the team the amount in a tweet on Wednesday.
He congratulated them for an impeccable display at the Kenya Inter-Counties Sports and Cultural and County Assemblies Sports Association Games (KICOCSA) football tournament.
"Awarded Garissa County Football Team with KShs. 500,000 that would assist the club in its preparation for upcoming inter-county tournaments. I commended the players for doing the county proud for securing a runners-up trophy in last year's KICOCSA football tournament, " Korane tweeted.
The team has been doing very well.
Last year it came second in the Kenya Youth Inter-County Sports held in Kapsabet, Nandi County after losing to Kakamega 1-0.
Korane has been keen on youth empowerment through sports, culture and the performing arts.
Sports has been embraced by the county government as a strategy of combating the radicalization of the youth of Garissa county given that Alshabaab militants operate in the county.
The football team has helped raise the profile of Garissa as a footballing county rather than a springboard for terrorist activities.
