Kisii residents especially those traveling to Nairobi will be forced to dig deep into their pocket after bus companies operating the route hiked fare charges.

A spot check at most booking offices revealed that the bus companies have hiked fare charges. 

Joseph Bogonko, an officer in charge of Nyamira Express bus booking office in Kisii town said the hike in fare charge was attributed to the high number of travelers.

"Schools re-opened on Monday and we have been having several people travelling. We hiked fare so we can make profits and get money to fuel the buses given that the government also plans to hike fuel prices from September," he said. 

He said the hike in fare has not bared residents from travelling. 

Bogonko said the company hiked fare from Sh600 to Sh800. 

Henry Siocha who traveled today, Tuesday morning said he booked Nyamira express bus on Sunday after paying Sh800 from the previous Sh600. 

James Obare, an officer issuing receipts at Transline claimed that  Classic bus company said several people have been thronging their premises to get travel tickets.

"We are fully booked until Friday. People started booking last week Friday. Passengers using our buses will have to pay Sh800 while those using shuttle will pay Sh1000 from the previous Sh800," he said.

Egesa and Premium shuttle company is charging Sh1,000 to Sh1,500 for every passenger travelling to Nairobi.
