Speaking on Saturday in Meru where he was accompanied by local leaders, DP Ruto told off those seeking to impose constitutional changes on the country.

"On changing the constitution, it is the Kenyan people who have the final say. It is the citizens who will decide eventually and the citizens know what is suitable for them (Hiyo mambo yote ya kubadilishana mambo ya katiba, wananchi have the final say. Wananchi ndio wataamua mwisho na wananchi ndio wanajua ni nini kinawafaa), " the deputy president said.

His words come in the context of a raging debate on the prospect of a constitutional referendum that scores of political pundits say is inevitable.

The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) committee retreated last week to begin compiling a report of its findings after collecting views from Kenyans.

Its recommendations will form the basis of a referendum that is expected to fundamentally alter the country's governance structure.

This comes amid a renewed push by Thirdway Alliance leader Ekuru Aukot to create momentum for his Punguza Mizigo Initiative that continues to divide public opinion.
