Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua has welcomed President Uhuru Kenyatta's recent changes in his cabinet, lauding the president for streamlining the offices under him.
On Tuesday, Uhuru introduced more measures he hopes to use to help farmers benefit from their produce, including sacking former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri.
Gachagua, one of the politicians from the president's backyard who have been questioning his leadership, says that he hopes that the president is doing the right thing.
He told the Standard that the changes, which some have been seen as intended to punish Kiunjuri, should better be the lasting solution to the ailing agriculture sector.
"The President is doing the right thing to those who are not performing their duties properly. I hope in future, this country will run smoothly. God is watching everything,” he said.
Muranga senator Irungu Kang'ata termed the ouster of Kiunjuri and his replacement with Peter Munya as simply a political move.
According to him, Uhuru was trying to assert his authority as the Central Kenya ultimate political decision-maker, especially to those who thought that he is losing his grip.
“Every local politician will have to toe the line and a clear political road map for the region has been drawn,” Kang'ata said.
Until his sacking, Kiunjuri who was being seen as more allied to Deputy President William Ruto was being seen as one of the politicians likely to take over from Uhuru in 2022.
Kiunjuri has since declared that his sacking does not in any way affect his political career, declaring that he will remain around.
