The North Eastern county becomes the latest port of call in his ongoing charm offensive to woo Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to rally behind his Punguza Mzigo bill.

In a tweet on Saturday, Dr Aukot said that Garissa MCAs gave him a warm welcome and pledged their support for his initiative.

"#PunguzaMizigoBill2019 yesterday received an overwhelming support from the Garissa County Assembly members. We're moving forward, visiting all other remaining County Assemblies to put a case for the Constitutional Amendment Bill before the County Assemblies members," his tweet read.

Aukot's Garissa visit came in the wake of a High Court order barring county assemblies from debating the bill.

The initiative has divided opinion, eliciting mixed signals from the Kenyan people.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has opposed the bill publicly, calling on Kenyans to wait for the recommendations of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

Garissa Township Member of Parliament Aden Duale, who also doubles up as the leader of the majority in the National Assembly, warned Garissa County MCAs against passing the bill.

Duale had argued that the bill, in reducing the number of constituencies, would put North Eastern counties at a disadvantage.
