President Uhuru Kenyatta has lauded peaceful campaigns in the recently concluded Kibra poll, which saw different teams realigning ahead of 2022 polls.
Imran Okoth of ODM won the polls, beating his closest challenger MacDonald Mariga, who garnered almost half of Okoth's total votes.
Speaking in Sagana State Lodge on Friday, Uhuru hailed Kibra people for peaceful campaigns, a strategic move that targeted those opposed to the outcome.
According to the head of state, Kibra people did not burn property to those perceived to be their competitors like in the past.
“I never thought I would see a day we have peaceful campaigns in Kibra where people don’t lose property or lives."
"I saw a few people get stoned but they can speak for themselves. And even though our candidate lost, Kenyans, especially Mt Kenya people won,” he said.
Uhuru noted one of his traditional supporter who has been a victim of perennial electoral violence, adding that she noted calmness in the polls.
He said: “There is a woman I know in Kibra who even campaigned for me when I was still in Kanu. They burned her stuff even in 2007, 2013 and twice in 2017. I called her this time and she told me that the campaign should have extended a bit so that she gets some more money.”
Deputy President William Ruto accused ODM of instigating chaos in Kibra, demanding an apology from ODM leader Raila Odinga.
