The husband of Likoni ferry tragedy victim Mariam Kighenda, John Wambua, has been compensated by his insurance company.
Wambua embarked on the process of seeking compensation before the bodies of his late wife Mariam and four-year daughter Amanda Mutheu were retrieved from the Indian Ocean.
Wambua contacted his agent over the matter before he was given the green light to receive compensation after the tragic incident.
On Monday, the insurance company’s Mombasa branch manager Priya Shah confirmed that Wambua was compensated on October 7.
The insurance company paid Wambua Sh682, 500.
“We are here to condole with the family of Mr Wambua and also hand over the cheque of the insurance claim he had made,” said Ms Shah when she visited Wambua’s house in Tudor, as quoted by the Daily Nation.
Mariam and Amanda died after their car slid off MV Harambee at the Likoni ferry channel on September 29 before plunging into the ocean. The two were coming from their farm in Gasi, Msambweni in Kwale County before the incident occurred.
The bodies of the victims were retrieved following combined efforts between the Kenya Navy and South African divers.
They will be buried in Mung’ala village, Makueni County after an autopsy is conducted.
