The unidentified man died after he was attacked by the hippopotamus in Kayatta village on Thursday.

The incident was confirmed by Mwala sub-county police commander Henry Kimathi.

Kimathi said the deceased was fishing with his friends when the incident occurred leading to his demise.

He said the beast had a new born calf.

Kimathi said the man made a mistake of stepping on the calf thereby making its mother furious.

"There are a lot of hippos in the river. The deceased had gone on a fishing spree with friends when he unknowingly stepped on a hippo's calf. The angry mother attacked them, his colleagues escaped leaving him behind. He was caught by the beast killing him on the spot," Kimathi said.

He addressed the press in his office on Saturday.

Kimathi told the locals to be careful while going around their businesses in the river to avoid more of such attacks.

The body was removed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital.

Residents called on Kenya wildlife Services officers to find ways of taming the disastrous hippo before it wrecks havoc in the area.
