Cherangany lawmaker Joshua Kutuny has threatened to lead farmers in a high voltage mechanized demonstration to the office of the president if farmers’ supplication won’t be heeded.
Speaking to the journalist just after a four-hour convention of a farmers association in Eldoret town on Saturday, Kutuny slammed national government for giving farmers deaf ear on addressing the critical economic crisis that has bedevilled agricultural region.
Slamming Strategic Food Reserve (SFR) on proposed maize price, the Jubilee MP argued that Sh2,300 per sack is not worth to award farmers who rely on rigorous farming activities.
Kutuny asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to step up and find a remedy to an ailing National Cereal and Produce Board (NCPB) within seven days.
“I will be leading farmers in the demonstration and we shall drive our farm tractors, combine harvesters, all of them to the Harambee House in solidarity with the farmers. Enough is enough, the government should know we are not joking when we demand our farmers be attended to,” said Kutuny who was flanked by Nandi Hills legislature Alfred Keter and Uasin Gishu Kenya Farmers Association (KFA) branch director Kiporir Menjo among others.
During the meeting, it was agreed that the national government hikes maize prices from proposed Sh2,300 to Sh3,600 per sack of maize.
The meeting also rejected any plans to privatize the Kenya Cooprrives Creameries (KCC) as well as expressing the need for credible fertilizers to be procured to foster farming production.
