The national Government has extended application deadline for the e-passport to 2022 meaning that Kenyans can continue using the old generation passport.
On Thursday, Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna in a statement to the media and seen by Citizen Digital extended the validity of the old generation passport to March 2020.
The Government had earlier announced that old generation passports would be rendered invalid beginning September 1, 2019.
The September deadline had seen Kenyans scramble at the Immigration department offices at Nyayo House to acquire the new generation passports.
“President Uhuru Kenyatta has today directed Cabinet Secretaries (CSs) for Foreign Affairs and Interior to work with Foreign Missions across the world to facilitate the issuance of visas to Kenyans on the current passports,” Cyrus Oguna said as quoted by the Citizen Digital.
The Government Spokesperson in his statement added, “The directive has in effect, extended the deadline for travel on the new e-passport to March 1, 2020 for all Kenyans.”
Mr Oguna stated that the application for the new generation passports will continue to across the country.
The Government Spokesperson pleaded with Kenyans to take advantage of the extended period in order to avoid the last minute rush when the deadline comes in 2020.
