A political crisis is looming between Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga over expected constitutional changes.
The BBI team is winding up writing proposals on Wednesday (today) and it's widely expected that the country could be subjected to another referendum.
Already, President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga have thrown their weight behind the team, a move that has left Dr Ruto in crossroads.
Ruto's allies have accused Uhuru and Raila of a sinister motive, arguing that the Handshake has been used as a political tool contrary to expectations.
“If it was to allow President Kenyatta and Jubilee to deliver on the Big 4 agenda, we could have seen the results by now.
“But it looks like this handshake was more political than unity of the country. I think we no longer have the Big 4 agenda but have the Big 1 agenda which is the BBI,” Nandi Senator Simon Cherargei said.
His sentiments were backed by Soy MP Caleb Kositany who accused Mr Odinga of using the handshake to scuttle Ruto's 2022 presidential ambitions.
But Minority Leader John Mbadi accused Ruto's team of insincerity, adding that they have been campaigning thus scuttling Uhuru's legacy.
“Yet they are the ones who have been playing 2022 politics by campaigning for Ruto (the DP).”
“They have been politicking all through for Ruto’s 2022 bid. Now when it comes to a referendum, they are becoming hypocritical that it will deter development. This is a confirmation that they do not value unity in the country,” Mr Mbadi said.
Raila Odinga has already supported constitutional changes, arguing that the country should consider introducing Parliamentary system of government.
