Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has dismissed claims that he was evading arrest after being busted by police in Voi.
He stated that he was heading to Mombasa for a certain workshop, not escaping arrest as many have indicated.
“Why would l run away? To where and to do what? I am a Kenyan who is always on the move doing what's good for the people,” he said in a statement.
Sonko said that he was well equipped with the answers for any questions which can be asked by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission should they head to a court.
His message to Nairobians is to keep calm as the truth will soon be known.
“I want to confidently state from the onset that I am more than ready for the lawful course that will help us know the truth,” his statement further reads.
EACC had earlier stated that Sonko was arrested amid efforts to escape.
“EACC confirms that Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been arrested while escaping arrest at a roadblock in Voi and is being transferred to Nairobi to face charges of corruption and economic crime," EACC tweeted.
His arrest was effected after the Director of Public ProsecutionNoordin Haji issued a warrant of arrest against him due to corruption allegations.
