Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit has asked President Uhuru Kenyatta and his administration to regulate foreign borrowing.
Speaking at Homa Bay primary school during the farewell ceremony of outgoing Southern Nyanza ACK Bishop James Ochiel, Ole Sapit said it is unfortunate the foreign debt burden has been on the rise yet the government is not doing much to resolve the same.
He asked the government to retrace its footsteps on the debts for the sake of economic growth.
Ole Sapit noted that most of the borrowed funds end up in people’s pockets when the taxpayers are being overburdened for no good course.
He challenged the Head of State and his deputy to ensure borrowed funds are utilised to the latter in development of infrastructure and other projects of the government.
“We worry when we continue to go into higher debt at the expense of the people and increase taxes because that will kill the ability of poor people to grow from one level to the other,” he said as quoted by Citizen Digital.
He further noted that corruption has made the nation lag behind in terms of development because of massive runaway corruption.
