Embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was on Thursday conspicuously missing during this year’s Jamhuri Day celebrations at the Nyayo Stadium.
The event was attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta, Prime Minister of Barbados Rt Hon Mia Amor Mottley, Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Amolo Odinga among others.
Earlier on, the governor sent a message expressing his gratitude to be part of Kenya as we celebrate this special day.
"I am happy to join the rest of Kenyans in marking the 56th Jamhuri Day celebrations," he tweeted.
He went on to wish Nairobian the best of luck during this festive season."To all Nairobi residents and Kenyans at large I wish y'all a happy Jamhuri Day," he said.
The governor was released on a cash bail of sh.15 million after he was arrested over the misappropriation of Sh.357 from the county government.Sonko skips Jamhuri Day celebrations.
While delivering the ruling, the Anti-Corruption Court Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti, said that he had taken into consideration all the charges the prosecution had levelled against the governor before granting him bail.
The county boss has maintained that he is innocent while attributing his woes to his political stand. The lack of Deputy governor has raised concern over an impending leadership crisis at the county government of Nairobi.
