The dam burst at around 9pm on Wednesday and the raging waters swept away nearby homes.

It is feared that the black mud from the dam has also buried other victims.

The most affected are residents of Nyakinyua farm which borders the dam.

By 1am on Thursday, several people had been rescued as Nakuru county government, the Kenya Red Cross and police teams carried the mission.

Darkness, however, hampered the mission.

In a press statement Wednesday night, Governor Lee Kinyanjui said the incident had led to massive destruction of property and lives.
