An eight-year-old boy has died on the spot at a road accident in Athi River town, Machakos county.
The boy was ran over by a speeding passenger matatu on Wednesday evening.
Tom Chweya, a class three pupil at Mosisa Primary School in Kisii county was crossing the road at the shopping centre when the incident occurred.
The deceased’s mother Linet Mitieka told the press he witnessed the incident that happened barely 20 metres from where she sales vegetables.
“I was busy selling vegetables at my kiosk as usual when the incident occurred, I saw the passenger matatu hit a child from a distance only to find out he was my second born son when I rushed to the scene,” said Mitieka.
Mitieka said the boy was in company of other children from their neighborhoods at Bondeni Slum in Athi River town where she lives with her family, husband and two other children.
She said the children were following others who were riding on a camel in the slum at a fee, the camel had just crossed the road few metres from the scene of accident from Bondeni to Sofia Slum when the 5.00 pm accident happened.
Mitieka said the child had been staying with her grandmother in their rural home and only visited his parents in Athi River town for the schools holidays two weeks ago.
She said the boy was crashed by rear wheels of the matatu.
The driver escaped and reported to Athi River Police Station where he was locked at the cells.
the body was moved to Shalom Community Hospital in Athi River town while the vehicle towed to the police Station.
