Eighty members of the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) have surrendered to police in Likoni.
The members, who include at least 15 ex-police officers, have been operating in Kaya forest in Matuga, which is the home to MRC chairman Omar Mwamwuadzi.According to the Amkeni peace initiative lobby group, which mediates between MRC and police, the retired officers had served in different capacities before joining the group. The members were received by DCIO Henry Ndombi, OCPD Benjamin Rotich and Likoni DCC Erick Mulevu at Likoni social hall on Thursday.Mulevu said security officers are committed to re-integrating reformed members back into society.“The MRC remnants are reforming and are ready to work with security officers. Police are closely monitoring those who have failed to heed our call,” he said, as quoted by Baraka FM.Ali Mwachibagaya, who spoke on behalf of the group, said they were approached by Mwamwuadzi to join the group, adding that he regrets the move.He said the reformed members are ready to join Kenyans in building the nation.On his part, Amkeni peace initiative coordinator Abdulahi Mkulu, an ex-police officer, said the lobby group is doing its best to ensure all members surrender.The members have been residing in Matuga ,Msambweni Likoni and Kinango in Kwale county.
