Uasin Gishu has started the process of evicting street children in Eldoret Central Business District (CBD).

According to Children Department Director Julius Yator, 80 children have been removed from the streets since the exercise started on Monday night.

“We have started the process of removing street urchins from the streets and taking them to Eldoret Children Rescue Center where they will get education, food, and shelter,” he said at the rescue center, Tuesday.

“We will interrogate them to know whether they have parents, their home among others. For sure streets are not good places for children to live since it's against their right. We will continue with the process until our streets are free of street children who are the main cause of insecurity,” he added.

He, however, warned residents against giving them handouts since it encourages more children to come to the streets.

“If one can get sh 1,000 from well-wishers what will stop others from being street children since they see it as a way of making money. At the moment we have 1,980 street children,” noted Yator.

He said the move was successful due to the concerted efforts of the Uasin Gishu County government, national government and the Children’s department.
