The family of the late former Vice President Michael Kijana Wamalwa has announced the cancellation of the public commemoration of his 15th memorial.
The family of Wamalwa, who died on August 23, 2003, made the announcement on Thursday.
The kin noted that the event will be celebrated at a private function, as the anniversary comes at a time when there are ongoing renovations at his Kitale residence.
“The family wishes to inform Kenyans that due to ongoing renovations to his mausoleum at his Milimani residence in Kitale, the annual anniversary will not be held this year,” the statement read, as quoted Daily Nation.
The family has asked their close friends and allies to bear with them following the announcement. Wamalwa is remembered for his mastery of the Queen’s language and his fight for democracy.
He united with Former President Mwai Kibaki to remove Kenya African National Union (KANU) from power under the NARC Coalition. He was later named the vice president before his demise. He is the only Kenyan vice president who died while in office.
This comes as President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday announced that the nation will no longer celebrate the anniversary of Kenya's founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
