The former Harambee Stars forward made the sentiments on Sunday as he descended on Kibra to sell his policies to residents.

"My bodyguards will be the youths, women and men. We don't want a bodyguard ("Bodyguards zangu ni mavijana wa mtaa, wamama na wazee. Hatutaki mambo ya bodyguard), "the Kibra parliamentary aspirant told voters.

Mariga's campaign comes just days after President Uhuru Kenyatta endorsed his parliamentary bid.

His bid has not been without setbacks.

About two weeks ago, he was disqualified from the race by the Kibra returning officer Beatrice Muli after his name was found missing on the voters' register.

There has been relentless scrutiny into his real age with his detractors charging that he doctored his documents.

Another controversy that he has had to grapple with is that he is a project of Deputy President William Ruto, criticism that he has strongly rejected.

Having spent most of his life playing football, McDonald Mariga finds himself thrust in the unfamiliar territory of the rough and tumble of politics.

He promised the people of Kibra that he would ensure that they are not harassed while engaging in their business ventures.
