The maize scandal is currently the biggest issue of discussion in the Rift Valley region and especially Deputy President William Ruto’s home county, Uasin Gishu.

Some of the farmers who supplied their maize to the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) have not been paid despite the board making payments of millions of shillings to traders who presented themselves as genuine farmers but had supplied imported maize.

To worsen this, the government has proposed a very low price for this year's maize, Sh2,300 per a 90-kilogram bag.

This issue has attracted a lot of public attention and it seems politicians from this region have decided to use it to play their normal game.

A section of legislators led by Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny, Nandi Hills’  Alfred Keter and Moiben’s Silas Tiren on Saturday called for the investigation of DP Ruto claiming he might be the cartel behind the farmers’ problems.

It was also claimed by the MPs that the DP owns a 500-acre piece of land in Congo where he plants maize which he is planning to import into the country.

Replying to these allegations, Kapseret legislator Oscar Sudi rubbished the claims and stated that the allegations are malicious and uncultured.

Other leaders from the Rift region allied to Ruto have claimed that the trio are working for someone who is trying to tarnish DP’s name.

This issue is definitely bringing divisions to Ruto’s camp considering that both parties are made of Jubilee MP’s who should be rallying behind his quest for the presidency in 2022.
